AIS and the Korea Accelerator and Plasma Research Association (KAPRA)
are bringing a new plasma rock breaking technology to North America. The
Plasma system uses the copper-oxide/aluminum thermite reaction to
generate energy to break rocks. The reaction is initiated by a powerful
electrical charge generated by a proprietary pulse generator. The energy
is fed to cylindrical thermite cells inserted into the rock. The plasma
method produces much less noise, gas and fly rock than conventional
blasting, and is much more time and labor-efficient than hydraulic ram
The plasma system uses a proprietary Electro-Power Impactor (EPI) developed by KAPRA. The unit is charged by a conventional electric source (either utility or generator power). The EPI releases up to 134,000 kW in a fraction of a second, initiating the thermite reaction in the cells.
The thermite reaction releases plenty of energy to break the rock, but does not release large volumes of blast gases.
The plasma method vibrations occur in the range of 50-120 hertz, well above the typical 15-20 hertz characteristic frequencies of buildings. (Note that conventional blasting produces vibrations in the range of 15-30 hertz, within the range that can excite buildings.)
Vibration amplitude in the near-field is typically one twentieth of that experienced with conventional blasting, and noise is similarly reduced.
Plasma cartridges are available in 0.6 (23 inches), 0.8 (31 inches) and 1m (39 inch) lengths. The cartridges are inserted into 51 mm (2-inch) diameter holes and stemming is placed on top.
The cartridges are functionally inert unless attached to the EPI, and do not require special handling or magazine storage.
The method has been successfully used in urban and suburban areas where blasting would be unthinkable. A short video documenting a demonstration of Plasma Rock Breaking has been posted at Plasma Rock Video, and additional information is available at www.plasmablastsystem.com.
AIS will be arranging more demonstrations of the plasma rock breaking method in the near future. Please call George Ford (415-310-6872) for details or to have a demonstration near you.
