Installation of Cable Mesh AIS Construction was contracted to install nearly 1,000,000 square feet of wire mesh drapery and cable wire mesh rockfall protection along State Highway 14 in Los Angeles County, California. This highway is the main route between the high desert communities of Lancaster and Palmdale and the greater Los Angeles basin and is used by hundreds of thousands of people daily. Normally, we would use helicopters for the majority of the mesh installation on a site like this. Due to safety concerns with helicopter hanging, all traffic in both directions needs to be stopped. Because of the high traffic densities on SR14, traffic control and lane closures were very limited. Full freeway closure was only allowed on Sunday mornings from sunup until 9am. Because of these limitations, much of the mesh for this project was installed with cranes using only single and double lane closures. However, two of the largest and highest sites were too tall for crane installation. Utilizing heavy lift helicopters, including S-64 Skycranes we were able to install fully assembled panels of mesh that measured as large as 30 feet by 210 feet. This enabled AIS to perform all of our helicopter installations in less that 12 3-hour periods. |

Installation of Cable Mesh AIS Construction installed 50,000 square feet of Maccaferri cable mesh on Highway 78 in San Diego, California. This was the first project on the west coast that used HEA Panels and wire mesh secured at the factory, rather than on the jobsite. This allowed the owner to reopen all lanes of traffic 3 weeks earlier than expected. |
