Mechanical High Scaling, Trim Blasting and Cable Mesh Drapery Heavy rains in the winter of 2006 caused a rockslide to occur above US-49 in Amador County, located in Northern California. Several thousand yards of rock and soil were left perched above the highway (50-55 degree). AIS was called in by Caltrans to remove the loose material and stabilize the slope. We quickly mobilized our crews and equipment, relieving Caltrans of the 24 hour traffic control. With one of our Spyder excavators on the slope, working with a front end loader and track hoe at the bottom of the slope, we were able to quickly remove the slide. It was decided that a cable drapery system would provide the best long term protection to the highway. Using the Spyder excavator, we were able to drill and install 10- cable anchor assemblies quickly and efficiently. Our crews then assembled 20,000 square feet of cable mesh panels and installed them using a helicopter. All of this work was accomplished with minimal traffic delays. |

Emergency Slide Repair, Paving and Construction of Rock Fence A rockslide occurred in the spring of 2006 on SR 140 in Mariposa County in Northern California, completely closing the highway. This is one of the main arteries into Yosemite National Park. AIS was called in to remove the slide and install a rockfall protection system. Approximately 6,000 cubic yards of rock and debris were removed from the highway and slope. A crew of our high scalers removed loose rocks and debris from the cliff faces above the road. During the course of our work, rocks continued to fall. Caltrans engineers decided that a temporary rock impact barrier would need to be installed. As the impact area was not safe to construct the fences, we chose to use a sliding barrier that could be built outside of the impact area and towed into position with heavy equipment. AIS quickly mobilized more crews and equipment and constructed 300 feet of 150 ft-ton barrier in 4 days. As rocks continued to fall, it was deemed necessary to build an additional 500 feet of barrier. We quickly procured the additional material and had this remaining portion of fence built and installed in 6 days. The road was paved and ready for traffic within 3 weeks of being contacted. |

Devil's Slide Rockslide Abatement This project took place in San Mateo County, California in 2006. After heavy winter rains caused the infamous Devil's Slide to reactivate, a rockslide occurred about 800 feet above the highway, sending rocks onto the heavily traveled section of highway 1, south of San Francisco. Approximately 1500-2000 cubic yards of rock and debris was left perched above the highway. This precipitated a full road closure. AIS was called in to help to assess the situation. Caltrans engineers felt that only hand scalers would be able to work on this slope (45-52 degrees). AIS suggested using one of our Kaiser “Spyder” walking excavators to scale the slope. From past experience we were confident that we would be able to safely work on this pitch and that the finished slope would be less hazardous than typical hand scaling would provide. Working closely with the engineers, AIS and Caltrans removed all of the loose rock and soil and created a deflection berm that would redirect any rocks into a catchment area. The actual time spent on the scaling and excavation was 2-3 days. |
